Concrete Patios in Northwest Indiana
Backyard patios, fire-pit pads, grill areas and walkways, in plain broom finish, color or stamped patterns.
Plan a patio you’ll actually use
A good patio starts with how you’ll use the space, not with the concrete. A table for six needs roughly a 12 by 12 foot area to pull chairs out comfortably; a fire-pit circle with seating needs more. Think about where the afternoon sun lands, where the grill smoke will drift, and how you’ll get from the back door to the yard.
Patio options
| Finish | Looks | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Broom finish | Clean, simple, slip-resistant | The most budget-friendly; easy to extend later. |
| Colored concrete | Integral or surface color | Softens the look without the cost of stamping. |
| Stamped concrete | Stone, slate, brick or wood patterns | Needs resealing every few years. See stamped concrete. |
| Exposed aggregate | Pebble texture | Good traction and hides dirt well. |
Built for our soil and winters
Patios don’t carry cars, but they still sit on the same freeze-prone ground as your driveway. A compacted base, a slight slope away from the house, and properly spaced control joints keep a patio flat and keep water out of your basement. If your backyard is low or holds water after a storm, as many do on Lake County clay, ask about drainage before the pour, not after.
Patio add-ons
- Fire-pit pad or built-in seating area
- Hot-tub pad sized and reinforced for a filled tub
- Walkway from the patio to a shed, garden or side gate
- Steps down from a slider or deck
- Replacing an old, sunken patio that now slopes toward the house
Permits
Rules for patios vary by town. Some towns require a permit for almost any construction; others exempt flat slabs at grade. Check with your town’s building department or let your contractor handle it. Our service-area pages link to each local office.
